Auschwitz

,

We entered Poland east of Berlin, the firststop being Auschwitz and stayed in a hotel about 100 yards from the Auschwitz Museum entrance.

Fortunately the crowds were dispersing in the afternoon and we had a 3 hour guided tour - in English. The guide pointed out that the first victims in Auschwitz were Poles and reminded us that Poland has endured a long period of political abuse. The first to fall in WW2, it was divided in two sections with the Germans occupying the west half and the Russians the east half. From 1939 to 1945 Poland existed only as a geographic entity. As a county, it did not exist.

Subsequent to 1945 it was governed by the USSR for 44 years - i.e until 1989, when it gained its independence.
