Introduction

On August 26 grandson Joel and I will be flying to Frankfurt, Germany. From there we will travel by car north to the Baltic Sea and east to seaport of Gdansk, traveling a route taken by the German Army when it invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 - 70 years ago.

Gdansk was also the site where the collapse of the USSR was initiated in 1989 - 20 years ago.

Both of these events are being commemorated in Poland this fall and we are looking forward to the experience.

On the way, we will be visiting the towns of Japenzin and Dennin where my paternal grandparents were born in the middle 1800s. These towns are located near the Baltic coast about 80 miles north of Berlin.

Other stops will include locations where I was stationed in 1952/53 with the 141st Tank Battalion - a branch of the US 7th Army in Europe.
